- This roleplay takes place within the first week of term.--
Thomas Baker sat alone at a table just outside of the courtyard. A rather old-looking and slightly scratched candlewick lamp illuminated his face and the book he had been intently devouring for the better part of an hour. Entrenched in his reading, he'd grope for the half-eaten scone he'd set atop the table for a bite or two before replacing it, not taking his eyes off the well-worn pages. Muggle literature that had remained with him since he was a boy. Despite the setting sun he'd remained where he was, only bringing out the lamp when the light had become insufficient for him to see the words. As it was, he had to break out the old reading glasses.
Sanctus Sapiens had been very much busy all day, first with lessons and secondly with something of a private project he was working on, though he was sure he'd missed out on his chance to see Charlotte at all today, it'd be curfew soon enough, though alteast the older students got to stay out a little bit after curfew. The centaurs didn't seem to be on the grounds today, either, though there was obviously movement down in the trees far in the distance if one could see that far.. but it was to be expected. Finally coming out of his dorms Sanc had headed straight for the outdoors like a man on a mission, first looking up to the red fading light on the horizon beyond the trees before a figure caught his attention in the corner of his eye. He sees Baker and quickly dives behind a pillar, taking a deep breath and desperately trying to stop himself from fanboying (not in a gay way of course) over the new, very awesome seeming new profesor, he had to make a good impression! But how to approach...? [c]
Sanctus Sapiens--He turns the corner to go around the pillar and clears his throat as he slowly approaches, very concious that he was interrupting the professors reading time. "Good evening professor" He says quietly and stops half-way to the table, tensing his jaw as he realised that was about as far as he got with his plan "Could i join you..?"
Charlotte Storm was leaving the Greenhouses after doing some observing for her own class's assignment. She'd planted a few shrubs last year and they'd been told to make note of changes and growth when they returned, and so Charlotte had taken extra time after classes to do just that. As she stepped out, she spied her boyfriend leaving from behind a pillar to step toward their new teacher, Professor Baker. The American girl shrugged, then stepped forward and called out, "Hello Professor. Hi Sanct," she added with a smile. "I hope your first days weren't too bad," she said to the men. "Mind if I sit with ya'll?"
Stella Vorona was returning from the lake. Her umbrella in her hand and shielding the setting sun off her back. Dressed rather casual now, a black dress and flats. She was bored. She been here all summer with Fallyn and Slava. Though students were back now! It meant time for new pranks. She spotted the people a distance away rather quickly. Her head tilted ever so curiously to the side. Oh, it was the new Professor. Fallyn told her to behave.. Oh poo. Like that would stop her, she soon walked up, not minding the older students. Though she was hung back, not really saying much till the other twos inrtoductions were done. "Hello."
Thomas Baker's head jerked upward in surprise, his book nearly dropping to the ground and glasses sent askew from the unexpected movement of his head. The man grasped at his book with fumbling hands as it nearly slipped from his grasp, before recovering in time to set it neatly on the table. So intent had he been on the reading that Sanctus' approach and voice had come completely out of the blue. "H-hello." Thomas cleared his throat. "Hello.. er.. " Oh bloody hell is it going to be a party? Not one but two students would follow soon after. With a 'may as well' shrug of his shoulders, the man gave a wave of one hand to indicate that the three could come over. "I'm sure you lot have more interesting things to be doing that talking to a boring old professor." A faint glint of amusement sparkled in his eyes as he carefully tucked his reading glasses in the pocket of his robes. "What can I do for you all?"
Sanctus Sapiens had reached out a hand as the book almost fell but seeing the professor catch it he lets his hand fall back to his side. He looked to Charlotte and gave a slightly awkward smile and then when Stella turned up he seemed to be quelling the urge to seem irritated, he'd just have to catch the professor another time and make some attempt at a good first impression now. He slowly sits down "Hey Charlotte, sorry i wasnt around today" he appologises "Was finally getting that painting started" he looks to Thomas and clenches his hands together under the table in an anxious sort of way, smiling nervously "Well, ive really been looking forwards to meeting you professor. My name's Sanctus.. or Mr. Sapiens if you call us by our surnames as most of the professors do" he smiles "You're teaching my favourite subject afterall, i want to go into the field of animal care abroad when i graduate, prefferably with the more dangerous creatures"
Stella Vorona listened, and kept silent. Wait.. animals? Her face wrinkled up, and she was not pleased. She hated animals. All of them. She soon let a fake smile go over her lips though, standing in her spot and twirling her umbrella in her hands. Waiting for Holy Human to finish speaking. "I'm Stella Vorona, sir." She said, before looking off to the side. Not to enthused to listen to the conversation.
Thomas Baker returned the nervous smile with one of his own. Green eyes flitted surreptitiously to the front door of the castle before he returned his attention to the ambush of students he now sat across from. Twenty-one years experience teaching muggle high-school students and here he was as nervous as a first year. As the Hufflepuff continued on with his proclamation of love for Baker's subject, a genuine smile lit up the man's face. "Really?", he asked with a tone of mingled bemusement and gratitude. Perhaps he'd expected a more difficult time finding students who appreciated animals as he did. Maybe this gig would be enjoyable after all. A vague, albeit polite, nod was directed toward Stella. Her sour expression had not gone unnoticed. Baker shrugged it off to her being in Slytherin. If there was one thing he remembered about his tenure at Hogwarts, is that Slytherins weren't the most aggreeable to all things Muggle related. (>)
Thomas Baker casually placed a hand over the cover of his novel, as if to hide the title, before slipping it into his pocket. He wouldn't make a very good first impression to a Slytherin by leaving muggle-related items laying about.
Sanctus Sapiens's own face lit up as a smile appeared on his professors face, feeling atleast acomplished with that "Yes! the last professor gave some of us each a kitten from her Kneazles litter, so if you see me around in the day you might catch me with her.. absolutely wonderful creatures, and far more intuitive than the average house cat- i-..." he became a bit distracted looking nervously at Stella, the boy wasnt a people person and she was a Slytherin. Despite the huge difference in age, the past antics of the girl had him nervous let alone his bad experiences with the house. "Sorry to have bothered you in your moment of relaxation though professor" He smiles across at Charlotte "I hope you're ok too Lotte? I havent had much of a chance to see you since school started...its been so busy and ive been doing that painting .. Damocles has been helping by modeling. I didnt realise Centaurs were so hard to paint."
Charlotte Storm said to Sanctus, "Its fine, honey. I had a lot of stuff to work on, too. My classes have been giving me homework non-stop today. So, I'm fine. But now I'm pretty free to do as I like. No more first-day assignments." She looked at the professor and said, "I'm Charlotte Storm. I'm from America if my accent didn't give anything away. Folks thought I needed a better education than Salem Institute." She looked over at Stella, waved, said, "Hey Stella. Nice to see you again," then she returned her attention to the Professor, "I don't mind talking to teachers. It makes it easier to ask them advice on other things besides magic and class-topics. Besides, you seem really nice." She looked at his book, then asked, "What's that? I love books! I have the whole 'Song of Ice and Fire' series back home." Muggle-born, quite obviously.
Stella Vorona turned her head to focus back into the conversation. She looked at San, and tilted her head, she didn't notice his nervousness because of her. Figured she was steriotyped. Then her gaze went over to the book. She enjoyed a good book now and then. "I've been reading a rather old book, Inkheart, is it...?" She said, trying to recall the title. She wans't really a social butterfly among the houses besides Slytherin.
Thomas Baker nodded, looking thoughtful. Damn. He'd a similar idea that involved the students caring for creatures of their own. Though if it had already been done before.. I'll do it my own way. He gave a small nod to himself as the decision was made. "Don't worry about it", he murmured to Sanctus with a wave of one hand, distracted by thoughts of lesson plans that would endear him to the student body. Charlotte's voice broke into his thoughts and he acknowledged her with a warm smile. A Ravenclaw, judging by her uniform. "Nice to meet you, Miss Storm", he intoned in his deep and polite voice. Baker's smile became broader as she spoke the two magic words: 'Muggle' and 'books'. Yes, he liked this one already. Add 'animals' to the mix and she'd be a perfect student. Feeling more pleased than he had all day, his growing feeling of ease around the student body would take a jolt at Stella's proclamation. (>)
Thomas Baker blinked. What? A Slytherin who knew of Muggle-related literature? Only his well-practiced self-control prevented him from gaping at the young Slytherin in surprise. "I don't think I've heard of that one." Baker kept his features neutral as he addressed Stella. He genuinely had not heard of the book, though he knew enough of wizard literature to guess that it stemmed from the Muggle world.
Sanctus Sapiens blinked slowly and looked amongst the group, seeming very much out of sync now. "Im a picky reader...usualy has to have dragons in it, most the time..." of course, the boy wasn't quite catching onto the muggle hints though he knew he was missing something, poor lad was a pureblooded and sheltered young man, only given a glimpse of the muggle world through Charlotte and perhaps the pestering of Professor Pontin in the corridors. "Do you have any personal pets professor? rather than the animals that are brought in for lessons?"
Charlotte Storm said, "I hope your classes will be fun. I'm not quite as adventurous as Sanctus, but I like some animals. I love his kneazle, and I'm very attached to my owl." She'd named it after an old Muggle actress, Elizabeth Taylor. "Elizabeth's the best pet I've had in my whole life. I never thought I could have a barn owl deliver my mail until I got my letter." She looked over at Stella, and asked, "You've read that one? It wasn't too gripping for me."
Stella Vorona listened to the Professor, she saw that jolt. Was it that surprising? She was only a half-blood. "It's a book about a husband losing his wife because whatever he reads comes to life." She said, and then her ears seemed to tune out the talk fo animals.. God she hated them. but tuned right back in when Char spoke to her. "Hm? Well, it was interesting to me at least. A story of love and family.." She trailed off, letting herself stop at that.
Thomas Baker stifled a yawn and scratched the back of his head with one hand. Bugger getting old. Blinking, he straightened in his chair and re-lit the wick of the now-sputtering lamp. In the presence of the impressionable youth the normally self-sufficient man had chosen wisely to use his wand rather than the book of matches that he'd taken from his desk drawer. "Mm?" In his sudden weariness the question had nearly escaped him. "Oh! Oh, yes. I've a few. " Now here was a question he could answer with enthusiasm. Decidely more awake, the professor withdrew a leather-bound wallet from his back pocket and removed the few photos that were inside. Where one might place photos of a loved one or children, he had instead several photos of the four-legged kind. (>)
Thomas Baker pointed to each in turn. "These two are half-siblings. Shakespeare and Chaucer. Had their mum, who was a half-kneazle herself. Not sure on the father." He indicated a photo of a pair of distinctly feline animals before motioning to the third, a medium-sized canine sporting a broad grin. "And this is Gatsby. Cheeky bugger that he is. If I didn't know any better I'd say he was part crup." As he spoke, the man smiled fondly with a distinct expression of wistfulness crossing his face.
Sanctus Sapiens leaned over quickly to look at the animals in the said album and seemed like he might faint from his over excitement about it all "Oh they're wonderful!" he says cheerily and motions to the dog "He's just charming! could i meet them sometime professor? please? I'd love to" he says enthusiastically and looks to Professor Baker with perhaps the most puppy-eyed expression he could muster.
Charlotte Storm giggled. "Oh Gawd I love your names!! They're all so cute," she gushed as she also looked at the pictures. "Oh I can guess that Gatsby's a troublemaker. But he also looks like the type to hog the bed, huh?" She added, "Invite me too." She got up and said, "I'm gonna go grab something to eat. Sanctus, maybe before curfew you could...maybe help me study?" she asked him, hinting slightly at a little more than studying. Then she said, "See you Stella." And to the Professor, "I'll see you in class, Sir. It was nice to meet you." Then, going to Sanctus to give her boyfriend a kiss at the top of his forhead, she went off.
Stella Vorona was barely even listening now. She looked zoned out, as if she was off in a dreamland, which she probably was. She slowly turned her head at the mention of her name. "Eh? Bye." She said, without really realziing that she was leaving, caught on quickly though. "I'm heading inside as well." She said, giving a wave.
Thomas Baker flashed a distinctly proud, albeit weary, smile as the students fawned over his photos. Being without children of his own, his pride instead extended to those of the four-legged kind. A hand flew to his mouth to cover the yawn he'd, until now, been able to fight back. "Th-thank you." Baker mopped his face with one hand before nodding toward Charlotte's retreating form. "See you in class. Nice to meet you, as well." He echoed her sentiment, managing this time to hide another yawn. Barely. You're not as young as you used to be, old man.
Sanctus Sapiens looks to Charlotte and smiles as she leaves, "Maybe, see you" he says and stands up slowly, having noticed the yawning and tiredness... when one was rubbing a hand over their face it was a sure sign that it was getting hard to stay awake "I look forwards to seeing you in class or otherwise professor, always around to help with the animals if you need a strong hand, any time" and indeed the unnaturaly large boy was built for the caring of larger more dangerous animals. "I'll see you around, have a good evening sir" he says and turns to dart off back to the castle with a bounce in his step and a grin from ear to ear.
Thomas Baker, as if by command, had risen to his feet as well. "You as well, Mister Sapiens. And thank you!" He called as an afterthought as the Hufflepuff darted away from the table. Collecting his things and carefully stowing his lamp in the worn traveling bag he often had with him, the professor made his slow way toward his dormitory. A faint smile remained as the man ran through the conversation of the last few hours in his mind. Hogwarts was beginning to feel like home again.
Thomas Baker sat alone at a table just outside of the courtyard. A rather old-looking and slightly scratched candlewick lamp illuminated his face and the book he had been intently devouring for the better part of an hour.
