Today, on May 2nd, in the year 1998, The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry experienced a night of both its darkest hour, and its brightest shining moment. Today is the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts.
In the early morning hours of that long ago day, the tyrant and dark-magical terrorist, Tom 'Lord Voldemort' Riddle, who had infiltrated the Ministry and taken control over all of Wizarding England, discovered that the one person on earth, the boy prophesied to have the power to stop him, Harry James Potter, had returned to Hogwarts. Harry Potter had, since the Summer of 1997, been in hiding from the dark wizard, along with Mr. Potter's young friends Hermione Jean Granger and Ronald Billius Weasley. The three friends, known forever as 'The Golden Trio', had beenon a secret mission to bring down Riddle, and arrived in Hogwarts to initiate the final stages of their great endeavor.
With assistance from the students within the school, calling themselves 'Dumbledore's Army', after the late Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, and the aide of Dumbledore's own freedom-fighting resistance group, called 'The Order of The Phoenix', the young heroes fought against the whole of Riddle's legions of wicked creatures, and most vile followers.
Many died in the course of the day. Over fifty people, students, Order members, and Death Eaters- the followers of Tom Riddle- fell. Among them were: Order members Remus John Lupin, werewolf and former teacher, and his wife, Nymphadora Tonks. They were survived by one son. Fredrick Weasley, who was reported to have been helping his brothers. Severus Tobias Snape, who had been a spy under the orders of Albus Dumbledore, and gave his life fulfilling his final orders.
A list appears that is simply titled: The Students of Hogwarts, some such as 'Lavender Brown', and 'Colin Creevey', have their year, house, and possible affiliation with Dumbledore's Army listed beside them.
The Death Eaters who died are pitied, for many had once been members of respected and good families. Some seduced by the lure of power. Others tricked by a clever man with a silver tongue. But all are sad losses only because they chose the darkness over the light, and ultimately met horrible ends.
The most notable death was that of Tom Riddle himself. After claiming to have killed Harry Potter, he marched to the courtyard in front of the castle, and declared his victory. But the Boy Who Lived had one last gambit. For Harry Potter had deceived Riddle, and escaped death yet again, and engaged in a fierce battle against him. After a long struggle and magical duel to be remembered for ages by all who witnessed, Tom Riddle's final Killing Curse was reversed upon him by Harry Potter's Expelliarmas. The so-called 'Dark Lord' had been defeated. And all who fought for the light rejoiced.
In this time, while we face the dangers and the fears brought on by the Cult of Solaris, let us remember those who have passed. The numerous men, women, and children who died, fighting to defend their world and the way of the Light, who sought to bring peace and hope in a time of darkness. Let us remember them, and call upon their strength, courage, cunning, wit, and loyalty, so that we may all be able to band together against the evils of the world today.
Let us remember the fallen, and acknowledge their sacrifices. Remember the victorious, and remember their bravery. And remember the defeated, that we may not repeat their choices, and never tread the path of darkness. Let us remember, today, The Battle of Hogwarts.
