Elizabeth's parents were never really interested in children, so after her mother had fulfilled her pureblood obligation with Elizabeth she went back to her career, something unusual in wizarding parents, particularly pureblood. Elizabeth's grandparents fought in the war against Voldemort and Elizabeth spent a lot of time with them, being more important to her than her parents. They were the people who schooled her until she reached Hogwarts age.
When Elizabeth was sorted into Slytherin her parents were disappointed (her whole family was Ravenclaw) but her grandparents took it as a personal betrayal, severing their affection for her. Most of the other Slytherins at school avoided her, saying she had obviously been sorted into the wrong house, and the other houses avoided her because she was a Slytherin. However, as time passed some kinder Slytherins took pity on her and began to treat her in a more friendly manner, a matter certainly helped by the fact she could help anyone from first to sixth year with their Charms homework.
