Basics
Name: Aderyn Elain Powell
Nicknames: Ryn (She is not a fan of being called Addy, though, as she finds it too girly.)
Age: 15
Birth date: February 6, 2034
Gender: Female
Desired House Position: Gryffindor
Year: Fifth
Race: Caucasian
Weight/Height: 5’1” and 128 lbs.
Pet: Short-eared Owl named Delwyn. He's rather pale in coloration and partial only to family members - he'll nip at anyone else whom he's supposed to send a letter to.
Magic
Wand Type:
Apple - Apple is a gentle, outdoorsy wood that would find favor with a student skilled in Herbology or Care of Magical Creatures. It tends to get overwhelmed easily, and is thus rarely used with powerful cores (multiple dragon heartstrings or phoenix feathers, for example).
„Applewood wands are not made in great numbers. They are powerful and best suited to an owner of high aims and ideals, as this wood mixes poorly with Dark magic. It is said that the possessor of an apple wand will be well-loved and long-lived, and I have often noticed that customers of great personal charm find their perfect match in an applewood wand. An unusual ability to converse with other magical beings in their native tongues is often found among apple wand owners, who include the celebrated author of Merpeople: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Language and Customs, Dylan Marwood."
Aethonon Feather Core - Very similar to Abraxan hair, Aethonon feather cores favor beast lovers but goes for a rather more cunning approach. It likes those with the potential to be skilled tranfigurists and charmers and enhances such magic.
Length - 8.5”
Resilience - „pleasantly springy”
Patronus: As of yet she can't cast the Patronus charm, try though she might. When the time comes, it will be a bat.
„Initiation, death-rebirth, changes are taking place which are blessings, facing facts in ones life, fears are always beneficial, trust instincts. Bat tells us it the end one phase of life and the beginning of another. Bat can show how to navigate in the dark and unknown. Soon you will see the world with a new perspective, teaches sensitivity to vibrations around you, navigation, introspection and demonstrates ability of observation and power of meditation and solitude along with ability of working in groups when necessary. Bat shows how to make those important transitions."
Favorite Classes:
Care of Magical Creatures - Her life orients around this kind of work, after all! She'll even stay after class and clean up whenever permitted to, as well as tutor anyone in the class having issues.
Herbology - She may not be the absolute best in this subject, but she enjoys both the overall practicality and many hands-on aspects of the class.
Potions - Her mom is an avid potion-brewer, so she's picked up a thing or two (though she does not like being in the dungeons).
Astronomy - The many twists and turns of the night sky are always of interest to her, though she’s only average at the subject itself.
Least Favorite Classes:
Defense Against the Dark Arts - She is very hard-nosed about this subject when it comes to animals, especially since they are taught in class that some magical creatures or „pests" should be dealt with using harsh methods. She is convinced that there are kinder approaches out there that have not been discovered yet, though the lashing out from local Centaurs and Merfolk is not helping her case very much. However, it should be said that this bias only applies to animals who she believes are misunderstood, not the act of performing and defending against Dark Magic. See Weaknesses for more information about her issues with jinxing.
History of Magic - At 15, she still has a hard time grasping the ultimate importance of history, (something that may change as she matures) but her main issue with the subject matter stems from all of the conflicts that the Wizarding world has had against magical creatures in general. Being confined to a desk for long periods of time also does not help the bias.
Transfiguration - As amusing as this class can be, she ultimately just has a really hard time transfiguring anything herself and spends way too much free time trying to pass the class.
Skilled in: Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, Potions
Performs averagely in: Astronomy, Charms, History of Magic, Muggle Studies
Performs poorly in: Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts
Personality
Likes: Tending to Delwyn, her owl, as well as any other animal desiring attention or needing care, spending afternoons in the outdoors, swimming in the Black Lake (despite how cold it is and the warnings given to students for even being near the lake), hiking and camping in general, interacting with the house elves, keeping up with the Caerphilly Catapults, sharing rather useless animal-related trivia.
Dislikes: Eating meat (she is a vegetarian whenever the option is available), the current restrictions for students on being outside, pranksters (they remind her of her brother), injustice, cruelty, blood purists.
Strengths:
Healing - Any magic she performs that aids or benefits others comes very easily for her, and sometimes they even seem to have a very minor boost. This may or may not have something to do with her internal thoughts and desires about the matter.
Communicating with animals - She seems to have some kind of a magical affinity (or perhaps a deeply embedded empathy) for creatures with no voice of their own, or who do not have a voice that can make an actual impact among mankind. Her small stature and fluttery voice also certainly help her to come across as nonthreatening to even the most irritable of creatures.
Animal care and management - Her whole life has centered around the care and management of exotic animals, both magical and non-magical, so personal experience comes to her aid in most cases. She finds something to appreciate in even the ugliest or aggressive of beasts, though she always uses her head when dealing with them (e.g. she doesn't just run up and hug Hippogriffs).
Learning languages - Despite the clashes the Merfolk have had with the Wizarding world as of late, she has been bent on learning Mermish (though she has not made much progress) and even has the book. She is also bilingual in Welsh and English. How much of an effect this has on her ability to communicate positively with the majority of her peers is debatable, however.
Naturalist - This goes along the same lines as her skill in animal care and management, but it extends into her just being an overall outdoorsy person. She is very familiar with the local fauna and could probably live happily in the wilderness for a long time.
Singing - She has somewhat of a decent singing voice; nothing stellar, just something she employs when trying to calm others. She used to sing as a form of entertainment, but recently she can't bring herself to.
Weaknesses:
Jinxing / Dueling - She has to really focus to produce any spells that attempt to change or harm other creatures, such as jinxing, transfiguring, and even sometimes defending if it is used offensively. This is probably a mental affliction, rather than an incapability.
Arguing - She finds it quite difficult to be empathetic about differing points of view and therefore is capable of quickly making enemies. She usually has the best intentions, though!
Solitude - She often doesn't quite fit in with all of her peers due to her vociferousness about certain things, though she will still make an effort to protect those who are being bullied and show extra kindness toward shyer people. Being alone in the wilderness helps her focus and forget things that remind her of sadder times.
Low Self-Esteem - Her disregard for people with clashing opinions has impacts on her ego and sense of self. Sometimes, when feeling down, she questions her self worth and purpose.
Fears:
Hooded figures / Invisibility - It reminds her of the mysterious person who assaulted her home.
Character Description:
Posture: Slightly slouched
Build: Slender but very sturdy and strong, ectomorphic
Skin: Naturally fair, but is very freckled from being out in the sun all of the time and has a persistent sunburn-tan
Hair: Medium length, bright blonde, relatively straight but is often up in a ponytail
Eyes: Blue
Face shape: Round
Hands: Rough from working with animals, but small in size
Tattoos/Scars: Scars on arms, chest, and back from animal bites and scratches
Left/Right handed: Right handed
Clothing: Dresses for physical activity - jeans, shorts, tank tops, and t-shirts. She’s definitely not a frilly prissy girl. The "blanket" of robes that the dress code requires her to wear also tends to infuriate her.
Jewelry: None, it gets in the way
Other accessories: Sometimes she will wear the hat that Bran left behind, especially on sunny days
Mannerisms: Brushing the hair out of her eyes, squinting into the sun
Health: She’s sturdy, so relatively good
Hygiene: Pretty swanky when she’s been outside all day! But she still showers… when she has the time.
Speech Patterns: Slight Southern Welsh accent when she speaks English, as her family speaks Welsh at home. She holds out vowels, going up and then down in intonation, and slightly rolls her R‘s. Technically, it's very close to an English accent.
Unique phrases/words: She often puts the subject of the sentences at the end of her sentences to add emphasis, such as, „Absolutely done with it, I am!”
Voice: Light and fluttery, like a tiny bird but NOT screechy. Often she’ll kind of treat people as if they were unfamiliar animals unintentionally, raising her voice melodically to indicate good intentions, or adopting a forceful, scolding tone when annoyed or being disagreeable.
Physical Flaws: Scarred from working with aggressive animals… and she probably has skin cancer from the sun. :D
Mental Flaws: Nothing truly flawed here, but certainly witnessing the death of her brother has affected her in many ways.
Personality Outline: Way too opinionated and inquisitive; very practical due to being well-acquainted with labor; brave; tender with animals and shy people; not as involved in conversations that don't include animals or the Catapults, but when they are she talks almost constantly; a bit of a daredevil when it comes to discovering/caring for/rescuing animals or other things/people she cares for; rather immature, as she puts her beliefs ahead of the law system and tends to think she's right about most things (even though that is definitely not the case most of the time.)
Background
Mother: Riannon Powell - 43 years old
Father: Leolin Powell - 47 years old
Sister: Rhosyn Powell - 17 years old
Brother: Bran Powell - (would have been 16 years old) - deceased June 16, 2048
Her parents live on a plot of land in Caerphilly, where they raise magical animals to cultivate rare potion ingredients.
They have a breeding pair of Re’em which they raise in order to sell their rare blood on the market. Hardly anyone knows of the Powells' Re’em, and the one time someone did find out it ended in a familial tragedy. In the bird aviaries on the plot, they keep Jabberknolls and sell the feathers for memory potions and truth serums (the ostriches are kept in a separate pen and are raised for their eggs.) They continually raise Ashwinders which are magically contained, with many of the eggs produced being subsequently frozen and sold on the market. Fire salamanders are also kept for their valuable blood, which is used for its regenerative and curative properties. These aren’t the only animals kept here; rather, they are what are almost always on hand - often new animals are introduced and accommodated for as the occasions arise.
Other animals that are kept purely for recreation/as pets are their herd of mares. The family Griffin, Aneirin, is extremely protective of both his horsey „harem”, the animals on the land, and his owners. Sometimes the „first generation" Hippogriffs produced by the Griffin and the horses are sold, but they don’t mate very often.
When the family needs some extra funds, Riannon often leaves Leolin to tend to the animals while she goes on long voyages to pursue rare potion ingredients, such as Graphorn in the mountains, Murtlap growths (essence of murtlap) on the various shorelines around Britain, moleskin, or dragon blood.
Country of Origin: Caerphilly, Wales
Heritage: Probably pure-blood, but their family hasn't really kept the records straight
History:
The Powell family has been on the same plot of land for many generations; Riannon actually met Leolin through her quest for rare potion ingredients!
They raised their three children there, each being accepted into Gryffindor at Hogwarts as per family tradition. Rhosyn, the eldest daughter, was very studious, and participated actively in her education Hogwarts. Bran, the son, was the complete opposite, and often was a enthusiastic prankster who couldn't care less about his education. He definitely fed the youngest sibling's, Aderyn's, interests in Quidditch, though she was never even close to as good at it as he was. He continuously led her into various amounts of trouble, acts which she gladly reciprocated once reaching the proper age.
Unfortunately, during the eldest sister Rhosyn's preteen years, she had a life threatening experience with one of the animals on their plot of land, which ultimately led to her having a huge aversion towards them for the rest of her life. The two younger siblings hadn't ever had that much to do with their oldest sibling in the first place as she was older and tended to stay indoors most of the time (despite continual encouragement), but after her confrontation with the animals, they lost the chance to interact with her as much anymore when they weren't studying at Hogwarts. Rhosyn completely avoided visiting the family home at all costs, choosing to live with Riannon's animal-free sister (her aunt) during the summers in London.
Aderyn really had a hard time coming to terms with what she believed was her sister's abandonment of duty, though Bran did not seem as perturbed. The whole family missed her presence around the home, of course, with everyone barring Aderyn trying to be supportive of her.
Conflict came to the Powell family directly in 2048 along with all of the chaos throughout the Wizarding world. Someone with dirty intentions had probably caught wind of the Re'em residing in the small plot of land in Caerphilly, and tried to steal some of the blood. Aderyn and Bran had been outside in the horse corral at the time, messing around as usual, when their protective Griffin suddenly leaped into the air in all-out attack mode. A cloaked figure was revealed, who then cast some curses at the roaring Griffin. Bran rushed forward to interfere with some well placed jinxes while Aderyn attempted to hold him back, fearing for their lives. She was right in her fear, because during the split-second fight, Bran became the accidental receiver of a fatal curse that had been intended for the Griffin.
The masked would-be thief fled the scene, the Griffin tearing after him and not returning for weeks. The family mourned their resident jokester, once the source of so much joy, with Rhosyn even moving back home in recognition of their loss. Aderyn struggles to this day with overcoming her incredible sadness over her unintentionally murdered brother, and aims to right the wrongs she sees in the world.
